South Mississippi teen uses billboard to ask girlfriend to prom
GULFPORT -- Gulfport High School senior Halee Register
thought she was taking an afternoon trip to Edgewater Mall on Tuesday
with her boyfriend, St. Patrick Catholic High School senior Cory
Krivanec.
As the couple drove along Pass Road, Krivanec began to slow down and told Register to look up at the billboard near Toarmina's Pizza.
When Register looked up, she saw her own face on the billboard. In the middle of the billboard was a note that read, "Halee, will you go to prom with me? Love, Cory". A photo of the couple was in the bottom-right corner, framed in a red heart.
"I was so shocked," Register said. "It was so sweet." She said the billboard was a hit among her classmates and many photos of it have been posted on Facebook and Instagram.
"All of my friends thought it was really sweet," she said.
Krivanec said he wanted to find a special way to ask Register to their last high school prom.
"It's our senior year and I wanted her to be surprised," he said.
The billboard went up Tuesday and Krivanec said it will stay there for two weeks. His mother, Christine Krivanec, said she'd suggested last year that he ask Register to prom via billboard.
"Cory wanted to wait until this year," Christine Krivanec said. "He's a sweet, romantic kid."
The Krivanecs designed and planned the billboard for about a month.
This occasion isn't the first time Cory Krivanec has asked Register to a dance in a unique way.
"When I asked Halee to the homecoming dance this year, I took her out in a paddle boat in my parents' pond," he said. "When she accepted my invitation, my dad set off a fireworks show."
Gulfport High's prom will be March 2. St. Patrick's prom will be March 15.
Both plan to attend Mississippi State University in the fall. Register plans to study interior design, and Krivanec will seek a degree in mechanical engineering.
