PEARL
– Gov. Phil Bryant has declared the last week of May as Hurricane
Preparedness Week in Mississippi to make sure residents are prepared for
the upcoming tropical weather season. The 2013 hurricane season is
predicted to be an active season.
“Hurricane
preparedness is essential and starts with families,” Gov. Bryant said.
“Begin talking with your family now about your plan for hurricane season
and your emergency supply kit. Don’t wait until a storm enters the
Gulf.”
Yesterday the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released their
prediction for the 2013 hurricane season. NOAA predicts 13 to 20 named
storms, with seven to 11 of them becoming hurricanes. NOAA also says
that three to six could become major hurricanes.
“NOAA has predicted
an above average season for hurricanes, which always raises red flags
for us,” said MEMA Director Robert Latham. “Local, state and federal
governments are more prepared than ever for hurricane season, but
personal preparedness needs to be on everyone’s mind. Have the
conversation with your family now about what your family will do and
where you will go if you are forced to evacuate.”
Here are some items
you and your family should have in an emergency supply kit before
tropical weather threatens:
- Flashlight and battery-powered radio with extra batteries.
- Canned and non-perishable food.
- Bottled water.
- Toiletry items.
- Pet food and pet supplies.
- Medicine and prescription medication.
- Copies of important family papers and documents.
