Arctic cold front to arrive in South Mississippi this afternoon, snow possible Tuesday
There's a 50 percent chance of showers and a high of 64 degrees today in Jackson County, according to the National Weather Service, but conditions are expected to change drastically.
The NWS says an arctic cold front will move through south Mississippi and southeast Louisiana this afternoon, and the very cold air will remain through Thursday.
There continues to be potential for sleet, freezing rain, snow and hard freeze conditions on Tuesday night and Wednesday night.
Tonight, there's another chance of rain showers before 4 a.m. in the Pascagoula area, then there's a slight chance of freezing rain and sleet. It'll be cloudy with a low around 30 degrees, forecasters said, and blustery with a north wind of up to 25 mph.
Tuesday will likely bring freezing rain and sleet after 4 p.m., and the local area will see a high near 35 degrees with wind chill values as low as 17 degrees.
Tuesday night will bring freezing rain and a chance of snow and sleet, with a low around 26 degrees. New snow and sleet accumulation of one to two inches is possible.
Across the nation, the cold air currently moving into the northern Plains and Midwest will continue moving south through mid-week. Afternoon high temperatures are expected to be between 10 and 30 degrees below normal through Wednesday.
Icy conditions will be possible Tuesday and Wednesday from south-central Texas to the Carolinas.
