Stone falls to Laurel in double overtime heartbreaker

LAUREL -- In a battle "between the bricks" Laurel pulled off a dramatic win against Stone, 34-28 in double overtime.
With the win the Golden Tornadoes move on to face Brookhaven in the second round of the 5A playoffs next week.
The Tornadoes' opening drive resulted in a fumble in the end zone recovered by the Tomcats for a touchback setting Stone up for a touchdown ran in by Justin Smith starting their lead 7-0.
Laurel answered back with a touchdown pass from the 21 yard line thrown by Keon Howard to Taurus Barnes to tie up the score 7-7 going into the second quarter.
The Tomcats pushed the lead 14-7 going into the half with a touchdown ran in from the 25 yard line by Clayton Johnson.
"We are normally a second half team," Stone High head coach Adam Stone said. "But tonight we weren't. We played a great first half."
Stone increased their lead 21-7 in the 3rd quarter with a touchdown pass thrown in from the 45 yard line by Johnson to Chandler Jones.
Laurel answered back with a touchdown by Howard from the 2 yard line, making the score 21-14.
The Tornadoes pushed forward again with a touchdown by Matais Robinson from the 6 yard line, tying the score 21-21 in the 4th quarter and pushing the game into overtime.
In the first overtime the Tornadoes came out with a one-play touchdown and field goal and Stone answered back with a touchdown field goal to push the game into a second overtime.
In the second overtime the Tomcats had the ball first but were unsuccessful in 4 plays for a touchdown. Laurel took the field and a handoff to Kobe Drummer resulted in the winning touchdown.
"Both teams played their hearts out tonight," Laurel head coach Todd Breland "You can't knock anyone on the field tonight they played a heck of a game. I just wanted to score more tonight, but we're going to keep doing what we're doing and see how far we can go with this thing."
"We did exactly what we needed to do tonight. Sometimes you have to go for it, and we went for it," Stone said. "Either way the Tomcats are moving forward. I learned a lot as a coach this season and we learned a lot as a team. This program is moving forward and we'll keep getting better and better."
